How Should Toilet Training Pants Fit? Australian Fit Guide (2026)

Colourful Rudie Baby Toilet Training Pants arranged around a Watermelon print pair

Toilet training pants should sit snugly at the waist and around both legs without digging in, leaving deep marks or restricting movement. They should stay close to the body when your child walks, squats and sits, while still being easy for them to pull down when it is time to use the toilet.

The right fit helps the absorbent layers sit where they are needed, but training pants are still designed for toilet learning rather than full nappy-level absorbency. This guide shows you how to check the fit and work out what may be happening if a pair feels uncomfortable or leaks.

What should a good training-pants fit look like?

A well-fitting pair should look more like close-fitting underwear than a loose pull-up. The waistband should sit flat, the leg openings should make gentle contact all the way around and the centre should not sag far below the body.

Your child should be able to walk, climb and squat normally. They should also be able to practise pulling the pants up and down, an important part of building toilet independence. Pregnancy, Birth and Baby recommends easy-to-remove clothing and notes that absorbent training pants can be used while children learn.

The best fit is secure enough to keep the absorbent panel close, but comfortable enough that your child can move and manage the pants themselves.

Start with clothing size, then check the measurements

Start with your child’s usual clothing size, then use the current garment measurements to check the fit:

  • Small, 2 to 3 years: 38 to 56 cm waist, 25 cm rise and 27 to 38 cm leg opening
  • Medium, 3 to 4 years: 40 to 62 cm waist, 26 cm rise and 30 to 42 cm leg opening
  • Large, 4 to 5 years: 42 to 66 cm waist, 27 cm rise and 32 to 46 cm leg opening

Waist and leg-opening figures are circumference measurements. Rise is measured from the top of the waistband to the base of the crotch. If your child sits between sizes, compare the measurements with a comfortable pair they already wear, then use the waist, legs and movement checks below.

Check the waistband

Run a finger gently inside the waistband. It should feel secure without being difficult to slide a finger underneath. The waistband should return to the body after stretching and should not roll down during normal movement.

A waistband may be too tight if it leaves deep marks, looks stretched to its limit or makes the pants difficult for your child to pull down. It may be too loose if it gaps at the back, slips down or allows the absorbent centre to hang away from the body.

Check the legs and do a movement test

Look around each leg opening while your child is standing. The elastic should touch the skin evenly without cutting in. Make sure the inner fabric is sitting flat and has not folded outward, as a fold can create an easy path for moisture.

Then ask your child to sit, squat and take a few steps. The pants should remain in place without pulling tightly across the thighs or opening a gap at the legs. This quick test is especially useful before sending spare pairs to childcare or packing them for an outing. Our toilet training at childcare guide covers the rest of the change-bag essentials.

Why can correctly sized training pants still leak?

Fit matters, but so does the size of the accident. Rudie Baby Toilet Training Pants are designed to help children feel wet and support daytime toilet learning. Depending on size, the current cotton range holds approximately 10 to 40 mL. They are not designed to perform like a full nappy.

Change the pants promptly after an accident. If they are leaking despite sitting correctly, the accident may be larger than the absorbent capacity, the inner fabric may be folded near the leg or your child may be ready for a different size. For a fuller explanation of what training pants are designed to do, read our reusable training pants guide.

Signs the size is too small or too large

The pants may be too small if:

  • the waistband or legs leave deep, lasting marks
  • your child cannot comfortably squat or sit
  • the waistband is difficult to stretch over the hips
  • the absorbent centre is pulled too tightly against the body

The pants may be too large if:

  • there are visible gaps at the waist or legs
  • the pants slide down during movement
  • the centre sags or twists away from the body
  • moisture escapes through a loose leg opening

If the fit looks right but your child is having only small, occasional misses, they may be ready to compare Toilet Training Pants with lighter Training Underwear.

Keep the fit consistent after washing

Wash used training pants on a gentle cycle and line dry for the best result. A low tumble dry can be used when needed. After washing, gently stretch the waistband and leg openings back into shape before drying or putting the pants away.

Check the sewn care label before adding fabric softener, bleach, sanitiser or another laundry treatment. Our complete training pants washing guide explains the recommended routine.

If you are building a practical rotation, having enough pairs available makes it easier to change promptly without waiting for the next wash.

The bottom line

Start with your child’s usual clothing size, then confirm the garment measurements and check the waistband, both leg openings and how the pants behave while your child moves. The fit should be close and secure without digging in, slipping down or making independent toilet trips harder.

Expect accidents while your child is learning. Raising Children Network advises families to stay calm and reassuring when setbacks happen. A comfortable fit, easy clothing and a simple change routine can keep the focus where it belongs: helping your child notice their body signals and keep practising.
